Countries
We work in four primary countries, India, Pakistan, Rwanda and Tanzania, with further work in Bangladesh, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and South Africa.
Our focus countries
India
Pakistan
Rwanda
Tanzania
In addition to these four focus countries, we will undertake work in several ‘project countries’:
Bangladesh
In Bangladesh we will work with education practitioners to estimate the demand for education evidence, and its take-up. We will also collaborate with the World Bank to link into large-scale reform efforts by the Bangladesh government.
Botswana
In Botswana, consortium partner Youth Impact will undertake research (including A/B testing and adaptive experiments) on literacy and numeracy interventions, to find out how to optimise cost-effectiveness, fidelity, and scalability.
Ghana
In Ghana, we will undertake research to support and inform the Ghana Education Outcomes Project, which ties funding to outcomes (such as literacy and numeracy improvements): the Education Outcomes Fund (EOF), a consortium partner, is an effort to significantly improve learning and employment outcomes by tying funding to measurable results. We will also have technical policy dialogue about this project with the Ministry of Education.
In addition, consortium partner Akyeampong Research and Development Consult (ARD Consult) will conduct and evaluate national and district evidence cafes, and will work with the emerging Ghana Embedded Evidence Lab in Education (GEEDLab) in the country’s Education Ministry.
Kenya
In Kenya, consortium partner PAL Network will undertake research (including A/B testing and adaptive experiments) on how to optimise ‘teaching at the right level’ at scale (an intervention where children are taught at the level of their own learning, rather than the level prescribed for their age).
In addition, consortium partners PAL Network and the REAL Centre, University of Cambridge, will analyse the cost-effectiveness considering equity and impact of certain learning interventions.
Nigeria
In Nigeria, TaRL Africa will produce an in-depth case study on ‘teaching at the right level’ in the country (an intervention where children are taught at the level of their own learning, rather than the level prescribed for their age).
Sierra Leone
In Sierra Leone, we will have technical policy dialogue with the Ministry of Education on the Education Outcomes Fund in Sierra Leone, as well as study the fund to support and inform its operation. The Education Outcomes Fund (EOF), a consortium partner, is an effort to significantly improve learning and employment outcomes by tying funding to measurable results.
South Africa
The Department of Basic Education in South Africa is represented in our consortium and will be part of the What Works Hub for Global Education in a variety of ways. As one part of this, consortium partner Zenex Foundation will produce an in-depth case study of the South Africa ‘ed lab’ (education evidence lab) model.
