Nathanael Bevan is Deputy Director of the What Works Research and Evidence, in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). He oversees the FCDO’s research investments on Economic Growth, Education, Gender, Humanitarian, Conflict and Politics. Prior to this he was Development Director at the British Embassy Kathmandu, where he led the UK’s international development priorities in Nepal, including the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. He has held a variety of different roles in the former Department for International Development (DFID), including work in Afghanistan and Pakistan on evaluating the impact of UK projects, and as Deputy Head of DFID’s Evidence Department. He was also DFID’s Head of Profession for Government Social Research. Prior to work in DFID, Nathanael led research and evidence teams in a range of positions across UK government, including in immigration, crime, and policing. He specialised in improving policing effectiveness through the application of technology and science, including reducing burglary in England and Wales.
