Dr. Keomany Thongpaseuth is an educational scholar who leads the Lao Language Research Center within the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports. With a strong commitment to preserving and developing the Lao language, she leads projects focused on enhancing linguistic knowledge, promoting the language, and modernizing Lao language teaching for the digital age. Under her leadership, the Center drives policy and research on Lao language principles, develops curricula, textbooks, teacher guides, and teaching materials for Lao language and literature, develops teaching methods and materials for students who speak non-dominant languages at home, and conducts research on community languages.
One of the Center’s outstanding achievements is the advancement of the Spoken Lao initiative, a national program supported by Australia through its flagship Basic Education Quality and Access Program in Lao PDR (BEQUAL). The goal of Spoken Lao is to improve the oral Lao language skills of Grade 1 students who speak a language other than Lao at home in order to improve Lao literacy, learning and engagement across the curriculum. Dr Thongpaseuth’s work plays a critical role in advancing early grade language and literacy learning outcomes and shaping sustainable educational policies for future generations.
