Jonathan Stern
Deputy Director, Global Education Innovation and Country Implementation, Gates Foundation
Jonathan Stern, Ph.D. is Deputy Director, Global Education Innovation and Country Implementation at the Gates Foundation. He has 20+ years of experience in education research and programme implementation, with a focus on what helps to improve foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) outcomes in primary school settings. Dr. Stern has provided technical expertise and assistance to education programmes and ministries of education in more than twenty countries throughout his career. During his time as Director of Research and Evaluation at RTI International, he oversaw the International Education team’s portfolio on education research, while serving as Principal Investigator on a range of cross-country research initiatives, designed to examine the impacts of FLN programming in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Stern received his PhD in International Education Policy from Vanderbilt University. He also has a master’s degree in International Educational Development from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
